Error: 'FAIL unable to create lockfile' from LMX licence server service'

Written by Charnjit Singh Dharival

The LM-X license server services stops with the error message:

FAIL: Unable to create lockfile C:\Windows\Temp\x-formation\\productionmodellingltd.lock!
Shutting down due to exit signal

This error is usually caused by one of the scenarios listed below:

1. The user account running LM-X Licence Server does not have permission to
access the directory.

2. More than one LM-X Licence Server instance is running on the machine. To
fix it, check processes for the other instance or reboot the Server. If you
need to run more than one licence server on a single machine see below.

Each licence server will host licences for a specific vendor. You cannot start
multiple instances of the same licence server on a single machine. When you
make an attempt to start a second instance of a licence server hosting the
same vendor on the same machine, the error generates.

Change the LM-X Licence server service from local to domain account via the following steps:

  1. Launch the service console from the server

  2. Right-click LM-X Licence server 4.7.5 and select Properties

  3. Select Log On tab

  4. Tick This Account instead of Local System account

  5. Click browse to find domain account and enter password

  6. Click OK
