Error: 'Error in process definition; Same resource relationship type cannot be used on multiple capacity resources'

Steps you can take to resolve the process definition error that occurs when Same Resource and Allow Task Overlaps are used together on a multi-capacity resource.

Written by Arthur Ashdown

You may see the following error when planning a works order:

Order code [order code]

Error in process definition, process [process name] Resource [resource name] Same resource relationship type cannot be used on multiple capacity resources. Remove the same resource marker from the dependency with op 2 or remove the task overlaps option on the resource [resource name].

Why this happens

This error occurs because Allow Task Overlaps and Same Resource are switched on at the same time on a multi-capacity resource. These two options are not compatible with each other.

A multi-capacity resource is one where the units available is 2 or above. This applies when:

  • You click Edit from the Resources menu and the units available is set to 2 or above.

  • A labour resource has a quantity adjustment higher than 1 from the default shift pattern assignment.

The Same Resource relationship type can only be used on a resource with a maximum of 1 unit available. Same Resource tasks cannot be assigned to a resource where Allow Task Overlaps is ticked and the units available is 2 or above.

Resolution

To resolve this error, you need to do one of the following on the relevant process or resource:

  • Remove the Same Resource marker from the dependency on the relevant process operation step.

  • Remove the Allow Task Overlaps option on the resource mentioned in the error.

📌Note: Same Resource tasks can be assigned to resources where Allow Task Overlaps is not ticked, regardless of the number of units available.
