Error: 'The source was not found but some or all the event logs could not be searched'

What to do if you see an event log security error when trying to save a plan in Orchestrate.

Written by Arthur Ashdown

You may see the following error when trying to save a plan in Orchestrate:

⚠️Error: An unexpected error occurred. Please report this problem to your system administrator with the following information: System.Security.SecurityException: The source was not found, but some or all the event logs could not be searched. To create the source, you need permission to read all event logs to make sure that the new source name is unique. Inaccessible logs: Security.

Step 1: Restart the SQL Server database instance

Restart the SQL Server database instance from SQL Server Management Studio. If this resolves the error, no further action is needed.

Step 2: Upgrade Orchestrate

If the error continues after restarting SQL Server, the cause is a collision due to task dependencies that make planning those tasks impossible. This issue has been resolved in Orchestrate version 7.66. Upgrading to this version or above will fix the error.

📌Note: If you are unable to upgrade, please raise a new case online and reference the title of this article. A member of our Support team will be happy to help.
