Error: 'Order Code: XXX No steps found in the process default' when trying to add order to the plan

What to do if you see a 'No steps found in the process default' error when trying to add a works order to the plan.

Written by Arthur Ashdown

When opening a saved plan copy and trying to add a works order to the plan, the following error may generate:

⚠️Error: Order Code: 3434/01 No steps found in the process default

You may also notice that the target stock level for a part shows as zero in the demand planner within the saved plan copy, while the current plan shows a positive figure.

Why this happens

This is standard Orchestrate functionality and is working as designed.

When you try to plan an order in a copied plan (in the Saved Plans folder, used for what-if scenarios within plan explorer), this error occurs because there are no Tasks assigned to that order on that plan. Orchestrate then attempts to plan the order using the process assigned to it — in this case, the default process — which has no steps associated with it.

This happens because Tasks are plan-specific objects, while Orders and Items are global:

  • When an import is run, data is copied into the current plan — regardless of whether the import is run from the current plan, a different plan, or with no plans open.

  • Items and Orders are visible across all plans.

  • Tasks are only visible in the current plan.

Resolution

The works order on the ERP system must contain the relevant routing. When the order is imported into Orchestrate, the routing is converted to a process, which allows the order to be added to the plan.

Once the routing has been added to the order in the ERP system:

  1. Delete the order from Orchestrate.

  2. Import the order again.
