Orchestrate: Release notes v7.83

Written by Charnjit Singh Dharival

What’s new?

We are pleased to announce the release of Access Orchestrate version 7.83

The following features are included in this release.

Features and Enhancements

Gantt Chart

  • View Picker dialog replaces the View Selection dropdown - views are now shown in a searchable tree with folder structure, making it far easier to find a view when you have many views/folders. Click a view to apply it immediately, or filter with the search box. The dialog remembers its size for the session.

  • Dynamic row heights - resource row heights now shrink to fit only the concurrent tasks visible in the current horizontal viewport, instead of being sized on the peak overlap across the whole timeline. Scrolling/zooming horizontally re-sizes rows automatically, and the resource you are looking at stays pinned at the top of the chart (including exact scroll position within tall rows such as stock plots).

  • Configurable minimum label size - new Tools > Options > Gantt Chart setting "Minimum Label Size to Display" (1-5, default 3) controls how many characters must fit in a task bar before its label is drawn. Lower values reveal labels on narrower bars. Applies immediately to all open charts.

  • New Colour By option "Component Availability (Order)" - colours every task of an order by the worst-case component availability for that order, so order-level material risk is visible at a glance. The existing option is renamed "Component Availability (Task)". Visible only when Pegging is enabled.

  • Render Stats can be switched off from the window - the Gantt Render Stats window has a new "Disable Render Stats" button that permanently disables the statistics; closing the window suppresses further pop-ups for the rest of the session.

  • Smoother rendering while scrolling/zooming - shift patterns, task labels, utilisation plots and capacity indicators are now drawn in a single pass, removing the brief two-pass delay/flicker.

Left Panel, Data Grids and Data Forms

  • Customise Data Grid Columns - Sales Orders - show/hide and reorder columns via the Options button or by right-clicking a column header, plus a sort dialog. Layout and sort preferences are saved per user.

  • Customise Data Grid Columns - Demand Planner - show, hide and rearrange columns via Views > Edit Data Grid Columns…; layout is saved per user and persists between sessions.

  • Unit of Measure columns - Item Unit Code and Item Unit Description columns can now be displayed in Order Planner, Demand Planner, Task Planner and Sales Orders. Hidden by default; enable via "Edit Data Grid Columns".

  • "Show: Active / Archived / All" filter - added to the Orders, Items, Processes, Resources and Purchase Orders data forms and their search forms. Defaults to Active, and switches to All automatically when you arrive from a search result.

  • Work List (Agenda View) fixed headers rewritten - the frozen header row no longer jitters or drifts out of column alignment while scrolling.

Planning and Scheduling

  • Tank Filling is now a built-in feature - Clean task placement is handled inside the Add to Plan gap-search algorithm, so planning Clean/Filling tasks no longer displaces tasks that are already on the plan. Clean tasks are automatically scheduled after all related Filling tasks complete, and a status-bar warning lists affected order codes if any Filling/Clean timing conflict remains. See "Action required" in section 2.

  • Track Order Quantity prompt when re-assigning tasks - changing the Works Order of one or more tasks where Track Order Quantity is enabled, and the new order has a different quantity, now offers three choices: Disable Track Order Quantity, Update Task Quantity to match the new order, or Leave as-is for pro-rata tracking. Cancel aborts the change.

  • Default value for the Key Task attribute - a new administrator setting in Options > Planning defines whether Key Task is Checked or Unchecked for newly created tasks (Gantt right-click, process step expansion, new process steps in Edit Processes). Task duplication still preserves the original value.

  • Error List persisted to the database - each plan's Error List is now stored in the database so it can be queried externally for reporting/auditing. All error types are captured, including those beyond the UI display limit. The list is written on a successful save and is authoritative for the plan, so all users of a Current Plan see the same, up-to-date Error List.

  • Clearer error messages during Plan Save - users now see "An unexpected error occurred. Please close and reopen the affected screen, then try again. If the problem persists, please contact your system administrator." instead of raw technical detail. Full details are still logged for diagnostics.

  • Save Plan dialog for new plans - pressing Save (Ctrl+S) on a brand-new plan now prompts for folder location and plan name instead of silently saving to the root folder.

SFDC / Evo Apps

  • "SFDC" settings tab renamed to "Evo Apps" to better reflect its scope.

  • Calendar View show secondary resources - new system setting (System Settings > Evo Apps); when enabled, tasks allocated to secondary resources appear in the Calendar View.

  • SFDC show secondary resources - new system parameter (Evo Apps tab, default ON). When OFF, tasks that only reach SFDC views via a secondary resource allocation are excluded from SFDC publishing. Default ON means no change for existing users.

  • Chat messages added before a plan save now sync - chat added to tasks that did not yet exist in the database is picked up and pushed to SFDC after the plan is saved.

  • Reset SFDC Actuals detects archived tasks - resetting actuals now warns if any selected task is archived and offers to unarchive them (listing up to 10) before continuing; cancelling aborts the whole reset.

  • More Downtime Types supported - the maximum number of Downtime Types rises from 255 to 32,767. Existing Downtime Types and bookings are unaffected.

Administration and Security

  • Audit logging for roles and permissions - all user role and permission management operations in Security Control are now audited, with a new Audit Log viewer in the Admin panel showing who changed what and when (role create/rename/delete, user-to-role assignment, role and user permission changes). Entries older than 6 months are cleaned up automatically.

  • Automatic sign-out when a user is de-provisioned - a user de-provisioned in Workspace while using Orchestrate is now detected and signed out within one polling interval (~30 seconds), instead of remaining in the application.

  • Improved Session Management logout - logged-out users appear greyed out in the session list while their application is still closing (rather than disappearing immediately), the Log Out button is disabled for users already logging off, and the grid auto-refreshes every 10 seconds. A user with unsaved changes now sees a single combined message (termination notice + option to save) instead of two pop-ups.

  • Perpetual Access Licences no longer show misleading expiry - perpetual licences now display "Never Expires" in the status bar and on Help > Licence Details, and no longer produce warnings such as "-7000+ days expired".

Performance

  • Plan deletion - large plans (hundreds of thousands of tasks) delete substantially faster with reduced lock contention; a new bulk plan-deletion utility is available for database maintenance.

  • Plan open / refresh - orders and custom attributes - fewer database round-trips and index-friendly queries make loading orders and order custom attributes significantly faster on large plans.

  • Update Tasks From Orders is now incremental - on refresh/reopen only tasks belonging to orders that changed since the last check are re-processed.

  • Print settings loaded in the background - plan opening is no longer blocked while page/print settings are read, which was especially slow when a previously configured network printer was unavailable. Settings are cached and reused, and you are told if they are still loading when you try to print.

  • Bill of Materials & BOM Enquiry redesigned as search-first - BOM forms open via a search instead of loading every BOM record (previously ~37s on large datasets). Adds type-ahead search in BOM Enquiry and a Last Updated column.

Additional Information

Action required after upgrade - Tank Filling

Tank Filling is now a Built-In Plugin:

  1. Enable it in Orchestrate System Manager > System Settings > Built-In Plugins.

  2. Then disable the existing file-based Tank Filling plugin from the Plugins menu in Orchestrate System Manager, to avoid the two implementations conflicting.

  3. Test that the built-in plugin behaves as expected; raise anything unexpected with the Engineering team.

Behaviour changes worth noting

  • Colour By dropdown: "Component Availability" is renamed "Component Availability (Task)".

  • System Settings: the "SFDC" tab is renamed "Evo Apps".

  • Simulation Import residual configuration has been removed from the database; the feature itself was removed in an earlier release.

  • Edit Tasks path shuffle behaviour: dragging, right-click Move selected tasks, and Edit Tasks > Work Start now all produce the same task positions and the same Error List for an identical move. As a side effect, the Edit Tasks path now uses the same (expanded) shuffle for other edits such as duration, quantity and setup.

  • Plan Save error dialog now shows a single generic message rather than technical exception text.

Stability fixes and improvements

Gantt chart and task manipulation

  • Dragging a task with a "Same Resource" link onto a resource already used as a secondary resource on a linked task is now blocked with an explanatory warning, protecting planning integrity.

  • Dragging a task backward into a non-working/downtime period now prompts to adjust the shift pattern, as it already did for forward drags.

  • Task selection no longer flickers on the Gantt chart when selecting from the Task Planner grid.

  • Duplicating a task onto the same resource now refreshes correctly - the row expands to show both tasks and clicking the duplicate no longer highlights the original as well.

  • Duplicating tasks to a different resource now updates the Resource Group when the destination resource is not a member of the original group.

  • "Build view for order" with the Works Order view enabled no longer zooms out to the whole plan; it focuses on the selected order's date range.

  • Hidden sub-minute (~30 second) overlaps caused by residual seconds behind HH:mm time edits no longer occur when duplicating, editing or dragging tasks on single-capacity resources.

  • With Allow Overloads on, changing a task's Work Start now moves its dependent tasks too, so successor links no longer break into red lines.

  • With Allow Overloads off, selected tasks are repositioned immediately to remove genuine overloads, keeping selection, links and Gantt display correct.

  • Close Gaps on a single-capacity resource no longer lets selected tasks leapfrog committed work ahead of them.

  • Successor dependencies no longer disappear after changing the work start date of a predecessor.

  • Tasks no longer move unexpectedly on other users' screens during plan refresh in multi-user environments.

  • Moving the same task by the same amount via drag, right-click move, or Edit Tasks now yields the same result and the same error list.

Planners

  • Demand Planner: the "items whose process does not produce them" warning no longer hides behind the Plan All progress dialog.

  • Demand Planner: the Error List no longer appears when only the look-ahead period is changed and nothing was planned.

  • Demand Planner: the "Batch Multiple" filter option no longer appears twice.

  • Order Planner no longer hangs indefinitely when planning orders with setup time near the planning start-date boundary on resources with gaps in working time.

  • Planning an order immediately after creating a new process no longer fails with "Process not found".

  • Planned Start Date in the Order Planner now updates when work start dates change via Material Dependencies > Edit Tasks.

  • Editing an order property (e.g. Quantity) in the Works Orders form and clicking OK now updates the Order Planner grid and Gantt chart immediately, with no F5 needed.

  • Changing a works order's code or description now updates the order shown at the top-left of the Edit Tasks pane immediately.

  • Adding multiple Works Orders to a plan with the Error List open no longer crashes/freezes the application.

  • Unplanning and replanning numerous works orders via Add to Plan no longer crashes.

  • The Algorithm Manager no longer crashes with a cross-thread error when running nested operations (e.g. Close Gaps during planning), and the duplicate progress bar is gone.

  • "Replan Close Gaps" no longer skips valid earlier slots for tasks with a shift-constrained secondary resource and setup suppression.

Work List (Agenda View)

  • The list no longer scrolls back to the top when selecting, right-clicking or double-clicking a task after scrolling down.

  • The list no longer scrolls to the top when re-sequencing orders with the Move Up/Down arrows.

  • Copying from the Work List and pasting into Excel now decodes HTML entities correctly and keeps multi-line cell content (e.g. Component Shortages) inside a single cell.

Saving, stability and data integrity

  • Concurrent saves to the same plan are queued and deadlocks are retried automatically with graceful error handling.

  • Plan saves no longer hang or fail through database lock contention between save and background data processing.

  • Saving a plan containing tasks linked to cancelled orders no longer produces repeated deadlock errors.

  • Deleting tasks on one plan for an order no longer deletes tasks belonging to other plans that share the same order.

  • Spurious "Task Edit Conflict" entries for tasks no longer on the plan (after Delete Order(s) and Tasks) are no longer shown, including those wrongly attributed to another user.

  • Two planners booking Actuals against the same task simultaneously no longer see a false Task Edit Conflict; the bookings are combined and quantity/percent complete reflect the true total.

  • Each user of a shared Current Plan now sees the same Error List after a successful save; stale errors no longer require closing and reopening the plan.

  • Crashes fixed: self-referencing task predecessor links (StackOverflowException); plans with orphaned process-step records failing to load; Task Notes containing very short or empty hyperlink text; "Clear Contents" on the uncommitted new row of the Items grid; ~15 further runtime exceptions across plan load, task dependency editing, sign-in/out, refresh and shutdown; "Handle is not initialized" on application close.

  • Data entry forms (Processes, Items) remain editable after a duplicate-code save error so the code can be corrected and retried; cancelling changes in the Items form no longer errors when child attribute data exists.

  • The Resource Groups form no longer traps the user in a repeating error dialog.

  • Updating a process with several resources from the same resource group on one operation no longer errors; you are asked whether to keep the individual resources or combine them under the group.

  • Resource List folder checkboxes now correctly show checked / unchecked / indeterminate based on child visibility, a "Displayed Resources" count label was added, and view changes scroll back to the top.

  • View Manager: the "Publish To Web" checkbox now saves on views that were never published; the view dropdown no longer flickers and no spurious "save changes" prompt appears after Save/Save As.

  • Work time and duration values no longer display floating-point noise such as 480.000000000006 minutes in tooltips, reports, Gantt labels and actuals.

Materials, stock, KPIs and SFDC

  • Stock no longer increases instead of decreasing for consumed items after SFDC task completion when AutoAllocatingStock is enabled.

  • Stock plots no longer double-count material for in-progress tasks when automatic material allocation is enabled.

  • Amending an SFDC completed quantity downward now correctly reduces the production KPI.

  • Stopping/restarting an SFDC operation on a previously completed order now correctly reverts the order status instead of still showing "Completed".

  • 2-stage fill job operations no longer revert from "Ready to Start" to "Not Ready" after being started, particularly after SFDC outage recovery.

  • Archived Works Orders are now excluded from KPI stock plots, pegging availability and material dependencies, removing negative stock values and an infinite Demand Planner loop.

  • Colour By Component Availability now refreshes immediately when supply is added, removed or unplanned - no save or reload required.

  • Editing order codes in the Works Order Header no longer fails on databases without SFDC enabled.
